Hungary: Government uses vaccine campaign to lash out at political opponents
As Hungary struggles to contain the spread of the coronavirus and forges ahead with its vaccination campaign, the government s opponents are being scapegoated.
Viktor Orban has been in office since 2010
It began with a fake quote. In early January, government-friendly media outlets in Hungary accused renowned political scientist Peter Kreko, executive director of the think tank Political Capital Institute, of urging the opposition to encourage people not to be vaccinated against COVID-19 so that as many people as possible would die. The opposition could then blame Prime Minister Viktor Orban for the number of victims and bring about his election defeat. Orban even made a personal statement about the allegations, saying that evil had no bounds.
PHILIPPINE SEA â The U.S. 7th Fleet that operates throughout the Indo-Pacific says more than 14,000 of its service members have received their full doses of the coronavirus vaccine, which it began administering on January 5.
âWe are in a pandemic and our principle weapon for ending this and saving lives is the vaccine,â vaccine coordinator Capt. Joseph F. Penta was quoted as saying in a news release. âWe owe it to ourselves, our family and country to make every effort to stop the pandemic.â
Receiving the vaccination was voluntary and medical personnel were on hand to answer any questions about the process, the release said.
