Credit: Justin McNulty MLA There has been widespread condemnation after a Syrian family s home was attacked in Newry in what police are treating as a hate crime. It happened in the Carlingford Park area of the city in the early hours of Sunday morning. The family had their windows broken and graffiti sprayed over the house. Speaking about the incident, Chief Inspector Amanda Ford said: “It was reported at 9.30am (Sunday 18 April) that sometime around 2.00am this morning that graffiti had been sprayed and a number of windows were damaged at the property. “Enquiries are continuing and at this stage, the incident is being treated as a hate crime. This type of violent crime is unacceptable in our communities, hate crimes have no place in today’s society and will simply not be tolerated.

  “Sporting clubs also use the mountain drive for training. “Whilst we welcome all visitors to the area there has been an increase in littering both on the drive and the surrounding roads. “Plastic water bottles make up a substantial amount of this litter.     “I would ask anyone using the drive and the roads to respect the environment as well as having a thought for the residents who are clearing litter every week.” The Sinn Féin representative continued, “I have contacted several Council Departments about solutions to the problem.   “And have requested a litter pick of both the Forest Road and Mountain Road.
