Bypoll for Council seat on March 15 Updated: Updated: Share Article AAA Byelection to a Legislative Council seat from the Legislative Assembly constituency will be held on March 15, said a notification issued by the Assembly Secretariat. The byelection has been necessitated to fill the vacancy created following the death of S.L. Dharme Gowda, Deputy Chairman of the Council, on December 28, 2020. While the last date for filing nomination is March 4 and the last date for withdrawal is March 8. Polling would be held between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on March 15 and counting would be held after 5 p.m. on the same day.

A.H. Vishwanath wants to contest Legislative Council polls

Updated: Share Article AAA Former Minister and BJP MLC A.H. Vishwanath, who has been barred by the Supreme Court from being made a Minister unless he becomes an elected member, on Monday met Home Minister Amit Shah’s confidant and BJP national general secretary Bhupendra Yadav in Delhi to discuss how he could get a ministerial berth. Soon after the meeting, Mr. Vishwanath told reporters that he had offered to quit the current nominated MLC post so that he could become the party’s candidate to contest for the MLC seat to be elected from the Legislative Assembly. The seat has fallen vacant after the death of S.L. Dharme Gowda of the JD(S).

Prathapchandra Shetty quit as Chairman of the Legislative Council on Thursday, after reading out a nine-page resignation letter in which he said the recent “untoward incidents” in the House “hold a mirror to the system”, and seeking an apology from the people of Karnataka. A motion to remove Mr. Shetty had been tabled in the Council and it was set to be taken up for discussion. However, he chose to quit and submitted his resignation to Deputy Chairman M.K. Pranesh.
