The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra is seeking artists age 18 and under as of Jan. 1, 2022, to enter its Young Artist Competition.
The competition is open to entries from all 50 states. Video applications must be received by Aug. 1; see complete instructions and guidelines at www.vancouversymphony.org.
This year, the symphony is expanding eligibility to young musicians in all 50 states as well as increasing the amount of prize money for each of the winners. Gold medalists win $5,000, silver medalists win $2,000 and bronze medalists win $1,000.
Entrants will compete in piano, strings and woodwinds/brass categories. After initial judging of applications, the top three candidates in each category will compete in Vancouver on Oct. 17.

Clowns Without Borders
The show must go…online! The annual Clowns Without Borders fundraiser will offer “Pandemic Pandemonium” streaming shows featuring favorite local performers joined by prominent international artists. The circus moves into guests’ living rooms to raise money to send clowns around the world so people can experience laughter, play, and feel hope, especially during humanitarian crises. The benefit includes two shows: one for children and all-ages with interactive elements and music starring Marisol Kimberly Rosa-Shapiro, Mike Funt, and Meredith Gordon; and an adult-focused show including performances by Portland’s Leapin’ Louie Lichtenstein and Poki McCorkle.

The winners of last year’s Young Artist Competition, violinist Hanami Froom, pianist Jacob Nenow and oboist Ben Price, are finally getting their due. Because of the pandemic, their scheduled appearance as soloists with the Vancouver Symphony was delayed until this weekend.
The concert will be livestreamed from Skyview Concert Hall. Sarah Ioannides, music director of Symphony Tacoma, will conduct the orchestra, which has been reduced to a strings-only ensemble.
Hanami Froom, winner of the string competition, is a freshman at the K12 International Academy. She began violin lessons with the Suzuki method when she was only 2 years old.
