It’s taken years to quantify Gila County’s homeless problem, but the Payson Homeless and Homeless Veterans Initiative board has done it one meal a day.
Since 2018, a group of government officials, advocates and nonprofits have met monthly to create a safety net for the homeless in Gila County.
The Gila County Homeless Task Force realizes that âall individuals and families have the right to safe, affordable housing in healthy communities,â because âhomelessness is unacceptable in Arizona.â
The group met on April 29 to discuss the projects and resources it has so far created. In order to negotiate the dizzying amount of support available for the homeless, however, the group has had to create a pathway to identify and screen Gila County homeless.
âThe Homeless Task Force has evolved over time with more people joining,â said Dorine Prine, coordinator for the Gila County Community Action Program. She organizes and chairs the meetings.
Never let a pandemic closed coffee shop waste to-go cups where thereâs a need at the Payson Homeless and Homeless Veterans Initiative Warming Center.
The Mazatzal Hotel & Casino recently made a large donation of paper goods to the warming center operated by PHHVI.
Staff said most of the paper goods came from the closed Coffee Korner in the casino.
Penny DeGroot, treasurer for PHHVI couldnât contain her excitement when she posed with grandson Ronnie when the two received the donation.
She told casino staff this donation will now allow PHHVI to provide warm drinks and soup with their to-go dinners.
