Corvallis teen battling rare disorder in need of wheelchair

With a heart for compassion and a choice for positive endurance, Corvallis Junior Skylar Tibbs just completed her eighth surgery for symptoms of a rare genetic disorder. Tibbs was in first grade when she was diagnosed with Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) and has endured seven other surgeries for the symptoms. She is upbeat and dedicated to her schoolwork and education about her diagnosis. “I’m the ninth person, and one of the youngest, in the United States to be diagnosed with this disorder,” she said Thursday. “Most of the time it is hereditary so could be in my family bloodline, but most people don’t experience the symptoms until their mid to late 40s. We think I’m the first family member to experience the genetic symptoms.”
