ST. PETERSBURG, FL Stand face-to-face with a giant, life-like painting of a gorilla that s intensity is palpable in the James Museum s new international exhibit, Go Artfully Wild; Artists For Conservation.
Emily Kapes, the exhibit s curator, said 63 international artists submitted work to this project that supports conservation efforts through the purchases of their art. You get a range of perspectives and animals, Kapes told Patch. It s a really fun show. And the artists bring awareness with the inspiring portraits.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL Possibly the largest crowd ever at the annual tradition of raising the Dr. Carter G. Woodson gathered outside St. Pete City Hall to celebrate Black History Month on Monday, according to Mayor Rick Kriseman.
Kriseman, other city leaders and community members gathered in masks and bundled up in coats during a chilly 57 degrees as they stood near the flag pole outside the city building.

PETERSBURG, FL The James Suggs Trio went from playing jazz every Sunday for packed crowds to almost seven months of pandemic uncertainty with canceled gigs in 2020 as they wondered, When will we get to play again? Musicians always face challenges, but the pandemic obviously added more, James Suggs, a jazz trumpeter for 31 years, told Patch. When it began, I can remember feeling as if I had lost my purpose. I couldn t express myself anymore. I didn t really want to practice because there seemed like there was no need.

Residents age 65 and older check into the new state-run vaccination clinic at University Square Mall in Tampa. (Department of Health-Hillsborough County)
Correction: The state has contracted with vendor Sharecare to handle appointments for residents to get vaccinated.
FLORIDA Hoping to restore order to what s been chaos since the coronavirus vaccine was rolled out to residents 65 and older in late December, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said the state will take over vaccine registrations.
Meanwhile, reports that people from other countries were traveling to Florida to obtain coronavirus shots spurred Florida surgeon general Dr. Scott Rivkees to sign a public health advisory order that prioritizes Florida residents for the COVID-19 vaccine.

For 33 years, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Miami-Dade Branch has worked tirelessly to pave a path to racial justice through activism and improving the treatment of Black people.

In observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the civil rights organization reflected on the state and progress of predominantly Black communities during a community listening session, allowing Miami-Dade residents to voice their concerns about prevalent issues plaguing the city. Moving forward these meetings will happen every third Monday of the month.
The discussions are being established as newly elected chapter president Daniella Pierre calls for increased interaction with the community, as an effort to help create solutions to its most pressing issues.
