2 NPA couriers surrender in Zamboanga del Sur

ZAMBOANGA CITY - Two New People's Army (NPA) couriers surrendered and have pledged allegiance to the government in the Zamboanga del Sur, a top police official said Monday. Col. Diomarie Albarico, provincial police director, identified the NPA surrenderers as Emeliana Ansegue and Melvin Gose. They both surrendered last Friday afternoon in Barangay Lower Landing, Dumingag town. Albarico said Ansegue is the chairperson of the Barrio Revolutionary Committee (BRC) while Gose is a member of the same rebel unit in Barangay Dilud, Dumingag. The BRC is under the Front Committee Big Beautiful Country of the NPA's Western Mindanao Regional Party Committee. Albarico said Ansegue and Gose disclosed they served as lookouts and couriers for the NPA rebels. BUTUAN CITY - No damages were reported after three strong earthquakes struck off the coast of Bayabas town in Surigao del Sur Sunday evening. Data from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) indicated that the magnitude 5.6 tremor hit 56 kilometers (km) northeast off the coast of Bayabas at around 6:24 p.m. An intensity IV earthquake was felt in the towns of Bayabas, Cantilan, Carmen, and Tandag City; intensity II in Bislig City and the towns of Marihatag, Carrascal, San Agustin and Lanuza, as well as some areas in Agusan del Sur. (PNA file photo) DIGOS CITY - A village in Magsaysay town in Davao del Sur has been hit by avian influenza also known as bird flu, officials said Monday. In a statement, Magsaysay municipal agriculturist Helen Carampatan said blood samples taken on ducks from Barangay San Isidro were found infected with the disease. The discovery came after municipal agriculture personnel conducted blood sampling of fowls on March 9 for monitoring and surveillance, in anticipation of a possible avian flu outbreak. This resulted in the culling of at least 3,008 ducks on April 2 in Barangay San Isidro to prevent the spread of the disease to the neighboring villages. Anthony Allada, municipal information officer, said the ducks were transported to the town from President Quirino, Sultan Kudarat. As a response, Mayor Arthur Davin immediately issued guidelines for the movement of domestic and wild birds, and activated quarantine procedures in all of its municipal borders.
