To embed, copy and paste the code into your website or blog: Since the beginning of 2021, North Carolina educational institutions have been subject to a variety of studies, orders, and directives related to school reopening from Governor Roy Cooper; the State School Superintendent, Catherine Truitt; State Board of Education Chair, Eric Davis; NCDHHS Secretary Mandy Cohen; and the Mecklenburg County Public Health Director, Gibbie Harris.  Now, after a bit of “back-and-forth” the North Carolina General Assembly in collaboration with Governor Cooper has weighed in with Senate Bill 220 (Session Law 2021-4).  In sum, the North Carolina General Assembly has required public schools, excluding charter schools, to provide in-person learning opportunities for students.  Here is a summary of the requirements from Senate Bill 220:

State Board Votes to Reopen N.C. Most school districts in the state have brought some students back into classrooms in some form or another with varying guidelines to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus. But some students have not been back in front of teachers in-person for almost a year. New guidelines from the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services say public schools should reopen for all K-12 students, require face coverings for all students, and six feet of social distancing for grades six and up.

To embed, copy and paste the code into your website or blog: While many North Carolina public schools had resumed some level of in-person instruction by the Fall of 2020, by the end of 2020, a majority of those public schools reverted back to 100% virtual learning due to reported record high rates of community transmission of COVID-19.  At the beginning of 2021, those public schools continued to implement the 100% virtual learning model.  However, for the first time since the onset of COVID-19, Governor Cooper, along with State Superintendent Catherine Truitt, State Board of Education Chair, Eric Davis, and NCDHHS Secretary Mandy Cohen, has unequivocally, “strongly recommended” that “all public schools provide in-person instruction using the safety protocols outlined in the N.C.
