Institutional audit at WSU after accreditation issues

Walter Sisulu University is set to undergo an institutional audit by the council on higher education (CHE). A CHE representative visited the university last week to capacitate staff on accreditation issues. Some of the university’s programmes were flagged earlier this year after it emerged they were being offered without proper accreditation.

Walter Sisulu University has been offering a programme, described as "useless" by past graduates, and slated by health academics for its lack of utility, without the required professional recognition for 10 years. The university's Bachelor of Science in Health Promotion is not registered by the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) and a senior university employee who asked not to be named confirmed that “thousands” of students were affected.

Demand for forensic probe as WSU campuses are shut

Walter Sisulu University (WSU) students have called for a forensic investigation into the university’s qualifications. The call comes as students have shut down three of the university’s four campuses after it was discovered that the university was offering several unaccredited qualifications. The shutdown began on Wednesday last week in two campuses Buffalo City and Butterworth and has since spread to the main campus in Mthatha.
