The tribunal, which released its report after a two-year inquiry into Oranga Tamariki uplifts on Friday, has said an independent Māori Transition Authority should be created to reform the agency’s care and protection system for tamariki Māori. “Māori must be given the right to chart their own path towards realisation in contemporary times of the Treaty promise of rangatiratanga over their kāinga,” the tribunal said in its decision.

A project to bring Waimarino health and social services together has huge potential for improving Māori health, Whanganui Regional Health Network chief executive Judith McDonald says. The change is being led by Erena Mikaere, who manages Ngāti Rangi s Ruapehu Whānau Transformation Plan.
The aim is to join the GP practice that serves Ohakune and Raetihi with what is now the Waimarino Health Centre in a single organisation, and add more services.
OPINION: I had the recent privilege of attending part of the three-day celebration to commemorate 175 years since the battle of Ruapekapeka. My prior knowledge of the battle and the context in which it was fought is sadly lacking, despite being descended from many of its participants. Attending a wananga on the battle at Kawiti Marae in Waiōmio, near Kawakawa, home of the battle’s instigator Te Ruki Kawiti, brought home how little I knew of the motivations, context and relevance of the battle in our early colonial period. The benefit of studying our own history is that we can literally walk the whenua on which it occurred – at Waiōmio we saw Kawiti’s weapons on display; at the battle site we investigated the holes of the “bat’s nest” and saw his cannon damaged by return fire from the British.

Hendy’s not just a talking head. He worked with the Government and other scientists, to find ways to track, predict and monitor Covid-19 in New Zealand. In short, he was applying the skills he had as an educator and physicist to try to help. As a physicist, Hendy’s involvement in Covid-19 and climate change may seem slightly unusual. But he explained, “It comes back to your responsibility as a scientist. I ve been an advocate of scientists asking themselves, ‘if not me, who?’ ” That applies to everyone. This morning’s New Year honours list recognises him and many other Kiwis who have offered what they could to get us out of sticky situations.
