60 years ago, the arrival of King Phumiphon and Queen Sirikit of Thailand caused traffic chaos as thousands of well-wishers converged on the nation’s capital.
In May 1951, Sir Thomas Blamey died in Melbourne, aged 67. He was one of Australia’s greatest military leaders, serving in both world wars, and was the first Australian soldier to be appointed a Field Marshal. Upon his death, he received many tributes in Australia and from around the world.

Carnival Atmosphere as Wangaratta Achieves City Status
In an atmosphere of carnival gaiety, and before a crowd of about 2000 people, the Governor (Sir Dallas Brooks) yesterday proclaimed Wangaratta, 146 miles from Melbourne, on the Hume Highway, a city.
