Pietermaritzburg is a âcollapsed cityâ

Durban - THE Pietermaritzburg city centre CBD resembles a dump site, but Msunduzi Municipality mayor Mzimkhulu Thebolla believes that he and his council were on the right track to turn around the ailing cityâs fortunes.
This was after opposition parties and the business sector in the municipality labelled Pietermaritzburg a âcollapsed cityâ.
Yesterday, Thebolla admitted that challenges existed but said it was an exaggeration to say the city has collapsed.
âGovernance issues politically and administratively have been identified as the cause of the councilâs problems. Since I was inaugurated as mayor there is a difference in Msunduzi. Administratively, there were many vacant senior positions and those have since been filled. If thereâs any vacant senior position, it is new. What is lacking now is to deal with the visible challenges like electricity, water and refuse removal,â�
