Last week I shared some thoughts about attending the 1957 second inauguration of President Dwight D. Eisenhower and Vice President Richard Nixon.
As I said then, I won the trip, along with three other South Dakota high school students, in an essay contest sponsored by the Sioux Falls Argus Leader. The topic was âWhat was the most interesting inauguration in American history?â I wrote about the middle-of-the-night swearing in of Calvin Coolidge. My effort eventually resulted in a personal letter from Grace Coolidge, his wife, that corrected some of my observations in preparing the piece.
Weâll get to the letter, which was professionally framed and hangs on the wall of my study, in a moment.
