New Delhi/Sonepat, January 21 Protesting farm unions today rejected the government’s offer to suspend the three contentious agri laws for a year and a half, or any mutually agreed period, and set up a joint committee to find an amicable solution to end the impasse. The Sanyukt Kisan Morcha, an umbrella body of around 40 unions, made the announcement following a meeting at Singhu border. It appeared to be a difficult decision for the union leaders to make as they held several rounds of talks through the day and even sought opinion from the protesters gathered on Delhi’s borders. The Haryana Police, meanwhile, have cancelled leave of its personnel in view of the stir.

Jyani said: “The houses of BJP leaders have been gheraoed for several weeks. We won’t tolerate ‘goonda’ elements,” he said.

The BKU (EU) is the only prominent union to vocally   the release of incarcerated intellectuals and activists during the protests—media outlets cast aspersions on the farmers due to this, but the union did not dilute its stance.  Joginder Singh Ugrahan founded the BKU (EU), which wields influence in Punjab’s Malwa region, in 2002. He has been leading farmers’ protests in Punjab for around two decades and is known to be a powerful orator. He hails from Sangrur district’s Sunam town and has also served in the Indian Army. In an interview with the freelance journalist Shiv Inder Singh in January 2021, Ugrahan discussed the ideology of t
