The Singapore government has decided to issue general correction directions to Facebook and Twitter over the circulation of statements regarding presence of a new variant of coronavirus in the country. There is a false statement circulating online by multiple media outlets and social media platforms, which implies that a new, previously unknown variant of Covid-19 originated in Singapore and/or risks spreading to India, read a statement by Singapore s ministry of health.

Highly contagious B.1.617 variant of coronavirus was first detected in India and has now spread to many countries across the world.
A day after Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said India should ban flights from Singapore over the emergence of a new COVID-19 strain, its high commissioner in India has denied reports that any homegrown variant is affecting kids. It said the strain that has been detected in many COVID-19 patients in Singapore, including children, is the B.1.617.2 variant.

Satyendra Jain’s comment came after the Singapore government issued a statement, objecting to Delhi CM’s comment about the “Singapore variant” of Covid-19, labelling it “unfounded assertions”.

The strain that is prevalent in many of the COVID-19 cases in recent weeks is the B.1.617.2 variant, which originated in India, Singapore’s Ministry of Health said in its website.

NEW DELHI: Singapore’s health ministry has refuted claims of a Singapore variant of Covid-19. This was in response to news reports which said that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has urged the Centre to stop flights from Singapore because of a ‘new COVID strain’.
“The Ministry of Health refers to the reports ..on 18 May 2021 (“Stop Singapore Flights: Arvind Kejriwal to Centre Over New COVID Strain”),” Singapore’s Ministry of Health said in its website. “There is no truth whatsoever in the assertions found within the reports. There is no “Singapore variant”.
