KARACHI: While the Covid-19 situation in the city continues to pose a serious threat to the health infrastructure, with sustained pressure on certain government health facilities being the ‘first choice’ of patients, several other facilities remain under-utilised, it emerged on Tuesday.
The Aug 2 data of the health department showed that the Sindh Infectious Disease Hospital and Research Centre the entire facility is dedicated to Covid-19 patients had no space left for patient admission in the ICU with only one bed vacant in its high dependency unit (HDU).

Alarm bells started ringing in Islamabad over the Covid-19 situation in Karachi where positive cases surged to 30.58 per cent as 1,704 people tested positive when 5,571 tests were conducted at 24 testing facilities in the city over the past 24 hours, Sindh health department officials said on Tuesday.
“The positivity of cases is continuously rising in Karachi, and we are still far from peak of this wave. With an alarmingly high number of Covid-19 cases, hospitalisation has reached record numbers and now most of the tertiary-care health facilities are unable to cope up with the pressure of patients,” an official of the health department told The News.

KARACHI: The CT scan and MRI machines of major Karachi hospitals have been lying out of order since several years due to sheer negligence of Sindh health department and Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), hospital sources said on Saturday.
The major diagnostic machines at big hospitals of Karachi, including Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital (CHK), Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto (SMBB) Institute of Trauma, Abbasi Shaheed Hospital (ASH), Sindh Government Lyari General Hospital, Sindh Government Hospital Liaquatabad and National Institute of Child Health (NICH) are faulty.

The Sinopharm Covid-19 vaccine’s first consignment containing 83,000 doses arrived at the Karachi airport on Tuesday evening.
The consignment was received by Sindh health secretary Kazim Jatoi, Project Director Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI) Dr Akram Sultan and other officials at the airport, from where it was shifted to the EPI storage centre in the city.
“We have received the first consignment of the Sinopharm vaccine from Islamabad, which arrived here in Karachi on Tuesday evening through a commercial flight. It comprises 83,000 doses, and from Wednesday, the vaccination of frontline healthcare workers will commence at a ceremony,” an official of the health department told The News.
