Wednesday, 19 May 2021 Nora Meister, Carlotta Gilli and Simone Barlaam all broke world records on the fourth day of action at the European Para Swimming Championships in Madeira, Portugal. The first record of the evening at the Penteada Olympic Pools Complex in Funchal came courtesy of 17-year-old Meister of Switzerland, who won the women’s 400 metres freestyle S6 in 5min 12.87sec. Meister left her rivals trailing in the wake, with silver medallist Yelyzaveta Mereshko of Ukraine 12.13 seconds behind as she finished in 5:25.00. The podium was completed by Verena Schott of Germany who claimed bronze in 5:49.25. The second world record of the night, and the first of two for Italian swimmers, went to Gilli in the women’s 100m backstroke S13.

Italian swimmers impress on home water at World Series in Lignano

Saturday, 17 April 2021 Italian swimmers put in some strong performances on home water on the opening day of the World Para Swimming World Series meeting in Lignano Sabbiadoro. World champion Simone Barlaam led a host nation clean sweep in the men’s 100 metres freestyle S1-13 category, with the S9 swimmer triumphing in a time of 54.52sec, which scored him 1,012 points. Silver went to compatriot Antonio Fantin, an S6 swimmer, in a world record time of 1min 04.52sec, giving him a score of 1,009, while the podium was completed by Francesco Bocciardo, an S5 swimmer, in 1:10.04, which scored him 999 points. Italy’s world champion Carlotta Gilli was beaten in the women’s 100m S1-13 category, as compatriot Arjola Trimi, an S3 swimmer, took gold in 1:33.92, scoring 974 points.
