I’ve checked out Criterion TV before, at her urging, and found it to be thought-provoking, well-curated films, interviews, docs and music, and pretty addicting. As with everything, not every offering was my cuppa tea but if I kept watching or came back, they pulled me back in again.

Roll up the beach towel, pick up the picnic scraps and toss the melting ice out of the chilly bin on to the grass. The votes have been tallied and our quest to find the Best Beach in Aotearoa is done and dusted, like sand from wet togs.
Time to name the winner from our readers 10 favourite beaches and three wildcards the Herald Travel team added to the shortlist.
New Zealand s Best Beach 2021 is Ōhope, narrowly pipping the winner of our 2018 contest, Whangamatā.

NO REGRETS?
Whenever I hear someone say, I have no regrets about anything in my life, I wonder. Really? I understand the philosophy that says, everything in my life has brought me to where I am today, and I am thankful for it.
But wouldn’t you be in the same place if you hadn’t done that dumb thing when you were 16 that broke your mother’s heart? How about that very hurtful thing you said to your best friend? Running a stop light and nearly killing someone? Sure, it all turned out okay, but no regrets? If so, I admire your spiritual enlightenment and certitude. Or, maybe, your wide-eyed ability to fool yourself.
