Hydrogen trains, electromagnetic braking system and pandemic-busting innovations win DfT cash
The Department for Transport (DfT) has announced the winners of its First of a Kind competition to develop new technology to encourage passengers back to the railway.
In total, 30 projects have received a share of a £9M pot to help develop the technology further.
The winners were selected by the DfT in partnership with Innovate UK.
Winners include:
A 360-degree immersive journey planning app, interchangeable train interiors and an app connecting passengers to the world outside their train

UK Government To Spend £20 Million Funding Electric Vehicle Innovations
Mar 13, 2021 at 7:34am ET ++ The funding is part of the build back greener policy
The government has announced plans to invest £20 million in “electric vehicle innovations” and it’s inviting companies to pitch their ideas. The news comes as the government “cements” its commitment to ending the sale of new petrol- and diesel-powered cars in 2030, with sales of new hybrid cars ending in 2035.
According to the Department for Transport (DfT), the new research and development investment is designed to help make the UK a world leader in electric vehicle (EV) design and production. It’s also intended to “help the UK transition towards all new cars and vans being zero emission by 2035”, as part of the government’s ‘build back greener’ policy.
previous winners include pop-up EV chargers and hydrogen-fuelled ambulances
