There are 122 residents confirmed to have the virus, which is unchanged from Wednesday, while the number of cases among staff and team members increased to 74 from 69 in the past 24 hours
TORONTO The mystery of why virtually all of the seniors and 74 workers became infected with COVID-19 at Roberta Place long-term care is now becoming clear one of the new variants of the novel coronavirus was behind the outbreak. Six residents at the home in Barrie, Ont. have now been confirmed to be infected with one of the new and highly contagious variants. âThis has been a very tragic and heartbreaking outbreak,â Dr. Colin Lee, Associate Medical Officer of Health at Simcoe-Muskoka District Health said Thursday at a press conference. âJust to give you some context, it s a facility of about 130 residents. We learned of this January 8th, we declared an outbreak, [ and] we had upwards of about 55 people becoming ill within 48 hours.â

A COVID-19 variant has been discovered at a Barrie long-term care home.
The strain was found in six tests and comes in the midst of a massive outbreak at Roberta Place Long Term Care.
A second test still needs to be conducted to determine the exact strain but the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit says the initial test shows a high chance that it is a variant “strain of concern.”

For the families of people living at Roberta Place, as well as those working inside the Essa Road facility, these past several days have been filled with stress and fear.
For the past two and a half years, Karen Fokkens DeBeer’s mother, Jane, has been living at Roberta Place long-term care home, the facility in south-end Barrie that has been ravaged by COVID-19 in recent weeks, including nine resident deaths.
