A man with a history of mental health problems, who is alleged to have left several disturbing messages on Instagram posts made by the sister of local tennis star Eugenie Bouchard, saw his trial begin at the Montreal courthouse on Monday.
Danny Arsenault, 42, is charged with criminally harassing Charlotte Bouchard and communicating with her repeatedly without a legitimate reason and with the intention of harassing her. The first charge carries a maximum 10-year prison term.

A man charged with harassing the sister of local tennis star Eugenie Bouchard through her Instagram account helped the Crown prove part of its case, a prosecutor argued on Tuesday.
Danny Arsenault, 42, is charged with the criminal harassment of Charlotte Bouchard and a related charge in a trial heard at the Montreal courthouse this week.

In his closing arguments, prosecutor Charles Doucet told Quebec Court Judge Silvie Kovacevich that part of the task of establishing guilt involves proving the person was the author of hundreds of messages posted on Charlotte Bouchard’s Instagram account between 2014 and 2017. Bouchard, who is now 25, was 18 years old when Arsenault allegedly began harassing her.
