KIEL, Germany This isn’t quite how Robert Habeck hoped he’d be spending the summer before Germany’s general election.
The Greens’ co-leader is on the campaign trail but keeping it low-key and local in his northern home state of Schleswig-Holstein rather than headlining the party’s national campaign as its candidate to succeed Angela Merkel as chancellor.
Habeck, a former environment minister and deputy premier of the state, has been open about how hard it was to lose out to his fellow co-leader, Annalena Baerbock, as the Greens’ nominee for the top job.
That decision has placed him in a delicate and at times awkward role in the run-up to the election on September 26: Habeck is expected to campaign hard for the party and its candidate even as she has stumbled through a series of gaffes but must also avoid anything that could be seen as upstaging Baerbock.

Wohl eher unverdächtig, sich an so etwas wie einer Kampagne zu beteiligen, dürfte die traditionell links-gerichtete taz sein.
