Some generation units are expected to return to service starting this evening, which would help ease the strain. He says while the load shedding will help Kusile and Arnot return to service, power cuts are still forecast for the rest of the week.  The generation supply constraints will persist throughout the high winter demand period, which increases the likelihood of further loads shedding.

The power utility will implement stage 2 load shedding between Monday evening at 4pm and Tuesday morning at 5am. Eskom spokesperson Sikonathi Mantsantsha says the breakdowns currently total 14,560MW of capacity, while another 2,300MW is unavailable due to planned maintenance. This load shedding has been caused by the higher demand as a result of the cold front setting in much earlier than expected, as well as high breakdowns of generation units.

Eskom spokesperson, Sikonathi Mantsantsha says a delay in returning some generation units to service has also contributed to the constrained grid.   Any further breakdowns could force the power utility to implement stage 1 or 2 load shedding at short notice this evening.    “This is most likely to occur between 17:00 and 22:00 in the evening,” says Mantsantsha.    “Breakdowns are currently totalling 14 857MW of capacity, while another 2 220MW is unavailable due to planned maintenance.    “The current outlook for the remainder of the week is expected to improve as Eskom teams are working tirelessly to return more generators to service,” he notes.
