There are more than 1 million people in Japan who live as hikikomori, or social outcasts. They spend the vast majority of their time locked in their rooms, shutting off all sunlight and outside communications. The problem has become so exacerbated within Japan that officials are beginning to study why Japanese youth in particular are prone to this phenomenon
