Saturday, June 12, and Sunday, June 13, are days that encourage residents and nonresidents of Michigan to fish, ride off-road trails and visit state parks - all free of charge.
“Three Free” weekend includes fishing without a license, an event that has been offered since 1986, said Sierra Medrano, Michigan DNR communications representative.
“Free fishing weekend pretty much provides a great opportunity for those who are interested in fishing to give it a try and for those who haven’t fished in a while who are interested in getting back into it. It’s a great opportunity for those to do it with family or with a friend, or even just by yourself.”
Several Michigan fishing seasons open Saturday
Put your 2021 fishing license to good use this weekend during the trout opener and the Lower Peninsula inland walleye and northern pike seasons, which both open Saturday, April 24. Enjoy Michigan’s world-class fishing opportunities on your own or bring your family along for the fun.
In Upper Peninsula waters, the walleye and northern pike possession seasons open Saturday, May 15. Michigan’s muskellunge possession season on all Great Lakes, inland waters, Lake St. Clair, and the St. Clair, St. Marys and Detroit rivers opens Saturday, June 5 (remember that catch-and-release fishing for muskellunge is open all year).

A healthy, abundant walleye population is a big part of Michigan’s fisheries. These native fish provide exciting opportunities for world-class recreational fishing and play an important ecological role as a top predator. Though several local, regional and Great Lakes-centric walleye plans exist, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources has drafted the first statewide walleye plan focused on inland waters – and is asking the public’s help in finalizing it.
