Police acted appropriately during 89mph chase of newlywed couple who died in fireball horror crash

A police watchdog has cleared officers of any wrongdoing after a teenage traveller couple they chased for running a red light died in a fireball crash in west London. The Independent Office for Police Conduct had been investigating after Patrick McDonagh, 19, and his pregnant wife Shauna, 18, were killed when their silver Renault Mégane hit a coach and burst into flames on the A40 Acton in February 2019. Police told an inquest they had originally pulled the car over for jumping a red light. However, when an officer approached the vehicle ‘to make sure everything was okay’, it drove off at speed, culminating in the fatal crash.
