AFR: 1 dead after early morning hotel fire

Albuquerque Fire Rescue crews were dispatched to a deadly motel fire early Wednesday morning at the Siegel Select, near University and Menaul.  According to AFR spokesman Tom Ruiz, one person is dead and two others are injured.  I saw smoke. I never seen a fire and I even saw the flames coming up from the bed, said Marcella McCarter who was staying at the motel.   McCarter suspects what may have caused the fire. Oxygen, she said. Because it says oxygen user in this room when I passed. The official cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Albuquerque Fire Rescue spokesman Tom Ruiz said one other person was hospitalized with smoke inhalation but is expected to survive. No firefighters were injured. He said fire crews responded around 6 a.m. to a fire inside a room on the second floor of the Siegel Select hotel at 2500 University NE, south of Candelaria. “They were able to make entry into the affected apartment, they pulled one person out,” Ruiz said.
