stephanie elam caught up with some of those rescuers. reporter: a joyous moment months in the making as two sick sea lions now fully recovered burst on to a southern california beach right into the sea and swim off to freedom. the journey back into open water was long and uncertain. which made preparing for the release all the more rewarding. the sea lions were driven to the beach for their final release. it s a nice day. reporter: unlike too many others, they were lucky to survive. thanks to the hero ic efforts o animal rescuers. who have been treating more than 120 sea lions for acid poisoning in recent months. they were animals having
seizures and giving birth at the same time. reporter: some didn t survive poised by an a toxic algae along the southern california coast that spread from santa barbara to san diego. it was the worst for many reasons. but also the tox similarity of the algae. reporter: cnn was there the day rescuers found one of the two sea lions released this week. she s having a small seizure. reporter: she s now known as sophie, but she was malnourished and suffering from multiple seizures and rescuers weren t sure she would make it. they are let that are jik and sick. reporter: she gained 35 pounds while in the center s care and that adds up to a lot of fish. the extreme crisis stretched the ability to care for so many sick sea lions. we had a delay in rescuing animals for a good two weeks
there are many sick sea lions. we saw a rescue of two from just here. the marine mammal care center come and put them in their truck, they take them to the center where they try to flush the toxins out of them. but that center is getting full. this has been such a spate of sea lions getting sick. why is this happening? perhaps it is an upswell of cold water full of nutrients. perhaps it s algae. and the toxins get into their brains. it causes seizures, lesions and they forget how to hunt and they either drown or beach themselves. i swim in this bay every morning and usually the sea lions are very chill, we noticed the algae. and then one sea lion bit a woman on the arm. and a couple days later, i saw a
