THE former Radio Maldwyn site in Newtown is no more. This week contractors demolished the building on Back Lane Car Park which was formerly the home of Montgomeryshire station, Radio Maldwyn, The station began broadcasting at 7.56am on Thursday, July 1 1993 and for a generation of people it became the first port of call for travel updates and school snow days. Originally a local station formed as a community co-operative, Radio Maldwyn became a Limited Company in the late 1990s. It was decided that in November 2010 the station was to close and for five years ran under the name Radio Hafren until it finally went off the air on Wednesday, February 11 2015.
