may be acceptable but not a wall. the president and speaker pelosi are still at odds over a potential solution. tomorrow the president takes his pitch for a wall directly to the u.s./mexico border visiting el paso, texas, for his first campaign rally of 2019. he also made inaccurate claims about el paso s crime statistics during his state of the union address. but president trump will have competition there. former democratic congressman and progressive campaign star batd tow o rourke and local leaders plan to hold what they call a march for truth as a counter message to the trump visit. phillip? that was nbc s kelly o donnell. kelly, thank you. joining me now, democratic strategist howard franklin and ned ryan ceo of american majority and former writer for president george w. bush. thank you for joining us. howard, we are less than a week away from the shutdown deadline. what kind of deal do we expect the negotiators to strike here?
women in congress, but at the same time president trump denounced what he called socialism that he vowed would never take over the united states. that was a reference to some in congress who are democratic socialists who have called for medicare for all, for ending private insurance. the president had a lot of lines in there that were intended to take jabs at some democrats. and the reason this state of the union was delayed, the government shutdown, the president insisted that he still wanted his wall. he did not give an inch on that issue. at the end of the day i think a lot of people didn t see much of a bridge to compromise on that particular issue, which looms large over this white house for the next several days. nine days until the next shutdown deadline, lawmakers looking to hash out an agreement before then. lauren fox joins me from capitol
we re only ten days away from the next shutdown deadline. nancy pelosi has said there will be no funding for a border wall in legislation. so if that s not there, that leaves the president only with the option of a national emergency. but that s not an option. he says i m not walking away from the wall. if he walks away from the wall, he loses the pool of people he has left behind him in that base. that leaves us with a national emergency. he can t declare a national emergency for the reasons we spoke of before. he would be humiliated by his own party, the supreme court, conservative supreme court would humiliate him. and you also, bob, this is not happening in a vacuum. it s not just happening in it s not just us and the media that are going to be watching this or people inside the house of representatives that believe this is an unpopular idea. it polls terribly among the american people. less than one in four americans
