in congress, they reached a deal to avoid a shutdown back in december. the president blew it up the last minute which was why there was the longest in history of 35 days shutdown. until it actually happens, i am going to remain a little bit skeptical that president trump is going to go for something that can so easily be portrayed as a defeat for him. it is as you pointed out, less of a deal in terms of funding for his border priority and the deal that he previously rejected. this comes after the polls have shown a resounding defeat in his decision and to press forward with the shutdown but neither republicans nor democrats on the hill really want it. so, i am not sure are that he will agree but former congressman suggested that they clearly are still looking at either declaring a national emergency or trying to take executive action to reprogram
hannity on fox calling into question of the deal wondering any republicans would vote for it. in congress, they reached a deal to avoid a shutdown back in december. the president blew it up the last minute which was why there was the longest in history of 35 days shutdown. until it actually happens, i am going to remain a little bit skeptical that president trump is going to go for something that can so easily be portrayed as a defeat for him. it is as you pointed out, less of a deal in terms of funding for his border priority and the deal that he previously rejected. this comes after the polls have shown a resounding defeat in his decision and to press forward with the shutdown but neither republicans nor democrats on the hill really want it. so, i am not sure are that he will agree but former congressman suggested that they
furloughed. imported food inspections are not interrupted, right? but their domestic food inspections have taken a hit. they ll try to call back the inspectors without pay. joining us here is dr. margaret hamburg who knows a thing or two of this. served as fda director during the obama administration. you were commissioner during a shutdown back in 2013. so you know this. you have a level of expertise few people do. put into realistic terms here, what is the level of risk or not here when it comes to the shutdown as it relates to the fda? it s really hard running the fda at any moment in time, but with a government shutdown, the task is so much more challenging. it is the case that, also, fda is always stretched too thin to do the jobs before us.
the shutdowns are always very difficult. and frankly, i know the president s going to speak tonight. if i were there advising him, i d say give us some way out. and as far as the democrats, they need to figure out how they can they can give a little bit and how they can still have a win. i was involved in a shutdown back in 95, 96. we got to a balanced budget. what it gets down to is both sides really want to reach an agreement, or do they want to keep fighting? but governor, isn t the issue the albatross here the physical wall? even if republicans if democrats give and republicans come to the table, it s the president standing alone asking for over $5 billion for a wall that he s lied about. he s lied about the need for the wall. he s lied about the fact claiming we ve already built portioned of it. he s lied about the vanity
hold the line. harris: but you need more democrats. lisa: that was the problem with the schumer shutdown back in january. they did this have election coming up, you had vulnerable senators who didn t want to do with it. they just wanted to pass something. they were worried about reelection. i think you will have some republicans having the same outlook, looking at 2020. nancy pelosi is saying that a wall is immoral, it s intellectually dishonest. it s ridiculous. democrats voted for a fence in the past, they voted for maintenance. harris: there is one in her state, near tijuana. lisa: we are willing to exchange villains of dollars for a wall. so, clearly they think it works. clearly they don t think it s immoral. it s a ridiculous statement for her to make. make it a more interesting argument, come on. harris: congressman, i do want to get back to what it is. it s more border patrol, it s more ice. and some democrats don t like ice. i understand that. but if you will have a h
