A retired banking regulator in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region admitted taking bribes amounting to more than $60 million in a corruption case with links to Baoshang Bank Co. Ltd., a failed local lender that was taken over by the state in 2019.
Xue Jining, a former head of the Inner Mongolia branch of the now-defunct China Banking Regulatory Commission (CBRC) and a former central bank official, pleaded guilty to charges that he took 400.4 million yuan ($62.1 million) in bribes from 37 individuals and entities from 2002 to 2015, according to

Facing invasive lizard dilemma, Chiayi trying a different tack

Taipei, Feb. 10 (CNA) The brown anole, an invasive lizard species native to Cuba and the Bahamas, has been causing damage to Taiwan s ecosystems for years, but solutions to controlling its spread have been elusive.
Now a university research team in Chiayi County is trying a different approach working with plant nurseries in parts of the county to get rid of anole eggs from plant soil that appears to be promising.
Chiayi County was the entry point for the non-native species and has been at the epicenter of its proliferation for nearly two decades.
Huishang Bank Senior Executive Probed for Suspected Links to Baoshang Bank, Sources Say

Xia Min, who is an assistant to the eastern Chinese lender’s president, was detained for questioning by the country’s anticorruption watchdog on Thursday, sources close to the Anhui province-based bank told Caixin on condition of anonymity. Authorities have yet to disclose why Xia is under investigation.

With the invasive species rapidly multiplying in Chiayi County, a team of volunteers has started hunting the arboreal lizards with slingshots. On Dec. 13, one of the hunters, Yuan An-nan (袁安男), posted images of their haul on Facebook. In the post, Yuan wrote that the iguanas are continuing to increase in number despite the ongoing hunting campaign. In the Facebook group 嘉義綠豆大小事, Yuan wrote that over the past month he has assisted in the capture of more than 200 along the Bazhang River, with some hunters suffering minor injuries in the process.
