white house. and matt miller, an nbc justice and security analyst is joining me here as well. pete, first to you. tell me about the van der zwaan the sentence and everything that went into this. reporter: well, this was a prosecution and a sentence largely meant to send a message that you shouldn t lie to the special counsel. that s really what this case was all about. this was not a prosecution to try to get his cooperation so that the government could learn more, the special counsel could learn more about potential russian meddling. and so the judge said that she had to sentence him based on what he did. she said he s a lawyer, he should have known better. he knew the importance of the special counsel s case. he knew how lawyers should conduct themselves but he still lied. she said this is not something that happened to him, in other words. he may have a great character. a lot of people spoke up for him in letters to the judge but she said finally she has to sentence him to send
