Worker at Lake Shore Gold mine dies SHARE ON:
Timmins is marking the start of 2021 with a fatality in its mining industry.
Lake Shore Gold says there was an incident underground at 3:30pm Friday. Spokesman Marcel Cardinal says “one person has passed away”. That person was working for a contractor at the Timmins West mine, but Cardinal won’t specify which contractor.
The Timmins Police Service and the provincial labour ministry are investigating.

An underground area where a subcontractor “passed away” at the Timmins West Mine Friday afternoon was re-opened later that same evening and declared safe for work to resume.
Lake Shore Gold issued a release Saturday morning stating that shortly after 10 p.m. Friday, “authorities had completed a review of the scene and released it, deeming that it was safe to return to work.”
