Its been told in bits and pieces, but its never stitched together as a compelling historical narrative. And that story is the rise of the sudden and spectacular rise of midtown manhattan in the 1920s. Which was an urban backwater before 1919. There wasnt a single skyscraper above 42nd street. And by the end of the decade, by the end of the 1920s, almost half of new york skyscrapers were in midtown. Its one of the great building booms not only in the history of the United States, but in the history of the world. This eruption, almost, that occurs in these years. And
