Stop asking about current salary in job interviews Published: 17 Feb 2021 How much are you currently earning? is a question hated by many job applicants – and rightly so. When I’m asked this question it makes me feel like I’m stepping into a trap, showing my cards, and allowing a potential employer to get away with offering me the lowest possible salary they can. In reply I’d like to ask What does my current salary have to do with the new job I m applying for? Every employer knows the salary range for the role they’re recruiting and an applicant’s interview and experience will help to place them within that – surely that’s where the negotiation begins?
