Park Remarks: Summer tourists are coming to southern Utah, get ready for money and crowds

Park Remarks: Summer tourists are coming to southern Utah, get ready for money and crowds © K. Sophie Will Park Remarks is a weekly column by our National Parks Reporter K. Sophie Will. April, come she will. And so will thousands of tourists. With that signature southern Utah heat coming back, it feels like St. Georgians are coming back to life. Traffic is bad again, more people are outside and wearing their sandals without socks again. We have reached the point of no return, to bad weather that is, hopefully. Cold weather made it easier to stay home and work while we ride out the rest of this pandemic, but now I m staring out my window like a sheltered Disney princess longing to be where the people are.

Bureau Of Land Management Seeking Comment On Shivwits Restoration

The Bureau of Land Management is taking public comments on a land restoration project in the Shivwits Plateau. The BLM wants to restore more than 300,000 acres in a remote area north of the Grand Canyon. To do that, it plans to target 40,000 to 60,000 acres that have the highest need. The bureau will work with the National Park Service and other groups to thin forests and remove invasive plants. Mark Wimmer is with the Bureau of Land Management. “Past management practices have affected this area, just like much of the West, Wimmer said, and so, trying to make it better for wildlife, that’s one of our partners is Arizona Game and Fish, and they are a proponent of this type of project, and so we’re designing it with mule deer in mind.”
