MANISTEE The Manistee Friendship Society has been instrumental in hosting the Feed America Food Truck since March 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there have been many families without employment and without enough money to buy food.

When you look down at your shoes, many thanks should go to a Black man named Jan Ernst Matzeliger. He was born on Sept. 15, 1852 in Suriname, South Africa and was the child of a biracial marriage. His father was a white engineer from Holland and his mother was a black woman in the Dutch colony. By the time Jan was 10 years old he began working in the machine shop owned by his father. He had a love for working with machinery.
