(Mainichi/Shinichi Anmi) TORIDE, Ibaraki A water-resistant foldable polypropylene cot for use at evacuation centers during disasters has been jointly developed in an initiative between the government of the east Japan town of Sakai and two private manufacturers. A local maker which planned the product s development has now donated 10 of the cots to the town. The cots are made with polypropylene, a synthetic resin said to be resistant to moisture from alcohol disinfectants and other sources. As such, they can be used repeatedly during the coronavirus pandemic, which has turned sterilization into an essential part of evacuation center operations.
