Ontario s ninth Indigenous university officially opened in Sault Ste. Marie across from a former residential school on National Day of Truth and Reconciliation.
A provincial plaque in Sault Ste Marie, Ont., has been updated to reflect true facts about a residential school that operated there. The former Shingwauk Indian Residential School now sits on the Algoma University campus. The previous plaque from 1977 excluded facts about the true purpose of the school and misrepresented the experiences of Indigenous students.
