A herd of six elephants was spotted in Shimsha river in Maddur, Mandya district. Local residents cautioned to be careful. Foresters warned against creating noise to ensure elephants return to woods. Second time in May that elephant herd entered Maddur taluk from nearby forest.
The Shimsha River, a tributary of the Cauvery and one of the three rivers flowing in Tumkur district is equipped with an automatic siphon system, touted as the first of its kind in Asia. Featuring two siphons, each 88 feet high, the dam efficiently siphons off water immediately upon reaching the maximum level (88 feet).
Nitin D, a manager in a jeans factory in Ballari, said, “More than 10,000 employees work in these factories producing jeans pants. An essential requirement for these factories is uninterrupted power supply. However, Karnataka is currently facing a severe power crisis due to depleting water levels in hydel units, resulting in an interrupted power supply. This has adversely impacted the jeans factories. Although we faced challenges during COVID-19 when many months went without work, this year has been promising with a surge in orders.
