The IDF this week set up a tank park in the northern Golan Heights, near Birkat Ram lake. This is routine activity as part of the army’s ties with the Israeli public, augmented in connection with Memorial Day and Independence Day. This time, however, the experience of climbing on tanks is meant to attract a different crowd: the Druze of the Golan Heights.
Relations between the Golan Druze and the state are becoming ever closer. The Syrian civil war, with the horrific massacres perpetrated by the regime against its citizens, weakened the traditional bond between the Druze on the Israeli side of the border and the Assad regime, and reduced their desire to be reunited one day with the country that ruled the Golan Heights until 1967.
