Bennett flees to his masochistic comfort zone: Under Netanyahu s sway

Follow May. 14, 2021 Naftali Bennett could have become a prime minister of historical stature. A one-time opportunity fell into his hands: to head a governing coalition whose likes Israel has never seen, from the Islamic party the United Arab List to his own Yamina and Gideon Sa’ar’s New Hope. The ingredients were in the pot, the fire was burning and all that remained was to stir, season and serve. But Bennett collapsed. The man who in the last election campaign aspired to replace Benjamin Netanyahu because of the “most dire management failure, equivalent to the Yom Kippur War debacle,” as he put it, lost his moxie after three days of riots.

Israel s presidential election slated for June 2, nominations to be submitted by next week

Michael Hauser Tov May. 10, 2021 The Knesset vote for the next president of Israel will take place on June 2, the Knesset Presidium confirmed on Monday after consulting with Knesset Speaker Yariv Levin. Candidates must collect the signatures of at least 10 lawmakers declaring their support by midnight on May 19th. “I hope that during these complex times, the president selected is someone acceptable to the entire country,” Levin said. Although he has yet to formally declare his candidacy, the front-runner for the post is Isaac Herzog, chairman of the Jewish Agency and former chairman of the Labor Party. Former minister Amir Peretz, who was suggested as a possible candidate, said last week that he would not run, as he is pursuing new ventures and spending more time with family. Associates of Miriam Peretz, an Israel Prize winner, have called on her to run.
