Dimapur, May 4 (EMN): The Pork Butchers’ Union in Dimapur (PBUD) on Thursday issued an ultimatum to the Nagaland government to address the ban on importing pigs from other states through Assam in the next two days, failing which it warned of increasing the price of pork from May 8. During a press conference at the PBUD office in Walford Colony, Dimapur, PBUD president Shikato T Swu stated that it had been 11 days since the ban was implemented, but despite submitting a representation on April 27, the Nagaland government had not responded to date. Swu said the ban on importing pigs from Assam was implemented by the PBUD to monitor the market price of pork. However, despite the lack of response from the government and the absence of public or organisational support, Swu stated that the PBUD decided to lift the ban on May 8 and increase the price of pork if its concerns were not addressed by May 6. DIMAPUR The embargo on the import of pigs from Assam entered the fourth day as the Pork Butchers’ Union Dimapur (PBUD) decided against lifting the ban as no “positive response” was received from the concerned authority. PBUD began closure of all the pork butcher shops in Dimapur on April 24 in protest against the Assam government’s ban on transportation of pigs through Assam. President of PBUD, Shikato T Swu told Eastern Mirror that the current cost of wholesale live weight pigs (Assam local pigs) is approximately INR 250 per kilogram and as a result, butchers were unable to sell pork meat at the retail price of INR 280, which has been fixed by the Dimapur Municipal Council. He further highlighted that this situation is not only concerning for the butchers but also for the public.
