Woman accused of spitting on Asian American faces hate crime charge

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.    A woman accused of spitting on an Asian American man and yelling an ethnic slur as he dined outdoors in Silicon Valley has been charged with a misdemeanor hate crime and battery, officials said. Karen Inman, 39, told the man to “go back to where you came from” as he ate lunch with a friend Feb. 13, Santa Clara County prosecutors said in a statement Monday. The case is the latest in a string of incidents of racially motivated harassment and assault against Asian Americans since the coronavirus hit the U.S. last year. Inman first came to police attention the same day that the man was spat on after officers received a report of a woman taking food and clothing from a store.

California woman charged with hate crime after spitting at Asian American, yelling slur

© iStock A California woman accused of spitting at an Asian American stranger and using an ethnic slur during an unprovoked attack was charged with a misdemeanor hate crime and battery. Karen Marie Inman, 39, allegedly told the victim to go back to “where you came from” during the Feb. 13 incident, the Santa Clara District Attorney’s office said in a statement on Monday. Inman reportedly approached the victim, a 36-year-old man of Asian descent who was dining outside with a friend in downtown Mountain View, and spat at him. She also allegedly used an ethnic slur. ADVERTISEMENT She was initially recognized for reportedly taking food and clothing items at a store just steps away from the restaurant before the altercation, Mountain View police spokeswoman Katie Nelson said in a statement.
