College of Desert faculty may call for no-confidence vote in new president, 3 board members

College of the Desert’s faculty is considering calling for a vote of no confidence against the school’s incoming president and three members of the trustees, saying they feel the board dismissed the opinions of the faculty in choosing the next leader. “There is quite a bit of anger on the part of the faculty. We feel we were not listened to at all,” Ed Reed, a speech professor who has been with the college for 15 years, told The Desert Sun on Friday. The board voted 3-2 on July 15 to appoint Martha Garcia, leader of Imperial Valley College, over longtime COD administrator Annebelle Nery, who had the support of a vocal group of faculty members, to be the College of the Desert’s eighth president/superintendent,

Desert Sun wins 35 prizes in CNPA s California Journalism Awards

The Desert Sun reporters, editors and photojournalists have won 35 prizes including eight first-place recognitions in the annual California Journalism Awards organized by the California News Publishers Association. Two first-place laurels went to environment reporter Mark Olalde, who was recognized both for his coverage of the Salton Sea (in the land-use reporting category) and best writing, for his profile of a Niland bird sanctuary owner who vowed to rebuild after a wildfire. Said the judges: “Very descriptive language that puts the reader at the scene. Lengthy story that doesn t feel long thanks to its colorful vocabulary and details that keep the interest level high.”
