The victim whom the Summit County Sheriff s Office has identified as 57-year-old local Kurt Damschroder and a friend triggered an avalanche in an area known as Square Top, in backcountry land outside resort boundaries near Park City Mountain Canyons Village, the sheriff s office reported Saturday. One of the skiers was caught in the avalanche, the sheriff s office continued of the Saturday-afternoon tragedy. The friend was able to dig to the victim and attempted lifesaving efforts. Because of the extreme avalanche danger in the area the friend had to leave. The extreme avalanche danger prevented rescuers from getting into the area before nightfall, their statement went on, adding that teams would resume rescue operations in the morning.

Kurt Damschroder, 57, was caught in the avalanche triggered while he and another skier were recreating in the Square Top area outside the Canyons Village area of Park City Mountain Resort. Summit County Sheriff s Lt. Andrew Wright said Sunday that Damschroder s body was recovered about 11 a.m. Sunday after mitigation efforts made the area safer to approach. He was buried in about 4 feet of snow, Wright said.

Clinton man killed in Park City backcountry avalanche identified

PARK CITY Summit County officials say a 31-year-old Clinton man died Friday after being buried in an avalanche on backcountry slopes near Park City. He was identified Monday as Kevin Jack Steuterman, Summit County Sheriff Justin Martinez said in a tweet. Our hearts break for the Steuterman family and friends, Martinez said. According to a news release from Summit County Sheriff s Lt. Andrew Wright, authorities received word about the avalanche in the Dutch Draw area about 10:09 a.m. The caller said she saw her boyfriend try to snowboard down steep backcountry terrain when the avalanche began and caught him up.
