“幼时不知路，今日上坦途。赤心献革命，决然无返顾。”这是刘英参加革命时写下的一首诗。在艰难困苦的革命斗争中，他以短暂而光辉的一生实践了献身革命的铮铮誓言。
刘英，1905年生于江西瑞金一个贫农家庭。1929年4月参加中国工农红军，同年9月加入中国共产党。他参加了中央苏区历次反“围剿”，身经百战，屡建战功。
1934年7月，刘英任北上抗日先遣队政治部主任。1935年3月，他与粟裕率红军挺进师进入浙西南，在国民党统治的腹地，先后开辟了浙西南、浙南、浙东游击根据地。在远离中央、孤悬敌后的险恶环境中，他领导闽浙边军民挫败国民党军多次“清剿”，坚持了极其艰苦的三年游击战争，培养了大批革命的新生力量，为浙江的解放事业奠定了坚实的基础。
