DEC and Partners Continue Efforts to Control Invasive Hemlock Woolly Adelgid in Lake George
Biological Control Release Underway Bolsters Second Round of Treatment to Limit Spread of Invasive, Tree-Killing Pest
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and partners today announced that additional efforts to limit the spread of the invasive hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA) on Forest Preserve lands in Washington County are underway. DEC forestry staff are treating 29 acres of infested hemlock stands near Shelving Rock and additional infested hemlocks near Paradise Bay. DEC is partnering with the New York State Hemlock Initiative and Cornell University to release Leucopis silver flies, a biological control for HWA, near Paradise Bay. These efforts are part of an ongoing, multi-year initiative to control the HWA infestation along the shores of Lake George that was discovered last August. Additional partners in these treatment efforts include the Adirondack Park Invas

Expect to encounter a little rain, and even some mixed-precipitation and the possibility of a little snow at the higher elevations. Tomorrow looks to be chilly, and blustery. Expect to encounter blowdown and keep an eye on the weather forecast.
Muddy conditions continue, especially in the Central Adirondacks including the High Peaks. The DEC mud season advisory remains in effect, so avoid hiking above about 2,500 feet, especially in the High Peaks, Giant Mountain, McKenzie Mountain and Sentinel Range Wilderness Areas.

Much of the region was hit with several inches of snow this week, and no doubt a few die-hards strapped on their skis for one last glide over the smoothest terrain in the Central Adirondacks where some areas received as much as 5 or 6 inches. That’s mostly gone now, or will be tomorrow.
Muddy conditions will remain for this weekend, although areas outside the Central Adirondacks and High Peaks remain dry enough for some good hiking. DEC mud season advisory remains in effect, so avoid hiking above about 2,500 feet, especially in the High Peaks, Giant Mountain, McKenzie Mountain and Sentinel Range Wilderness Areas.

“New York has become a huge destination for its beer, but since opening our taproom three years ago, I can attest to the draw of the Great Outdoors as well,” says Rick Shobin, a proprietor at the 15-barrell Woodstock Brewing in Phoenicia. “I think it has been especially helpful in the past year during COVID. We honestly haven’t seen a dip at all in revenue, and I think that’s because so many people are spending more
